Think You Might Have a Marketing Problem?  Could Be a Signature Brand Strategy Problem …

If you don’t have a signature brand strategy, you are everyone’s favorite generalist and nobody’s obvious choice. You post the value. You show up consistent. You say yes to every version of your service because turning someone away feels like turning away rent money. And still, somehow, the person with half your experience books the client you were actually made for. That’s a signature brand strategy problem, and it is way more common than any of us want to admit. It doesn’t mean you’re bad at what you do – it just means nobody can quite tell what bucket to put you in, and confused people don’t buy. They scroll right past the thing they can’t immediately name.

The Cocktail Girl Problem

My guest on the podcast this week, Kristin Lawton, spent years living exactly this. Twenty five years in brand and marketing communications, six years running her own agency, and for most of it, nobody could actually tell you what she did. She had a fun cocktail theme and zero clarity, so she got known as “the cocktail girl who does marketing.” Cute nickname … terrible business model. It took her almost six years in her own company to realize that a personality is not a brand, and being liked is not the same as being booked. What flips it, she told me, is understanding that niching down isn’t rejection. It’s the thing that finally lets the right people find you instead of scrolling past you along with everyone else in your broad, unhelpful bucket.

The Three Pillars Nobody Balances Evenly

Here’s the concept she walked me through, and it rearranged something in my brain mid-conversation. A signature brand strategy is built on three pillars: credibility, personality, and expression. Credibility is why people trust you. Personality is why they actually like you enough to buy. Expression is why they keep coming back for more. Most of us are heavy on one pillar and starving the other two. You either lean so hard into your personality that people adore you and never hire you, or you lean so hard into your credentials that you’re technically impressive and completely forgettable. Kristin builds a literal, repeatable tool for each pillar so you never have to guess which one you’re neglecting. A credibility line. A personality descriptor. A signature title. Three small sentences you can hold every piece of content up against and ask yourself, could anyone else have written this.

The Moment That Actually Stopped Me

The part that stopped me mid-conversation was when she described what happens when you skip this work entirely. You’re moving fast, you’re in launch mode, someone hands you a phrase that sounds good, you drop it into Claude or ChatGPT, and it hands you back something technically fine and completely generic. Over time your message gets a little weaker every single time you take that shortcut, until you’ve got what Kristin calls a Frankenstein brand. New offer here, old language there, a Facebook page you forgot you even had. Nobody consciously chooses to sound like everyone else. It happens one AI-assisted shortcut at a time, and the scary part is how normal it feels while it’s happening to you.

What This Means For Your Actual Business

If you’re a creative entrepreneur who’s been doing this a while, this is worth sitting with instead of scrolling past. You did not get generic because you’re lazy or uninspired. You got generic because you never built the three tools that keep your message anchored to something only you could say. A credibility line pulls you back every time you’re deciding on a new offer. A personality descriptor tells you whether a piece of content actually sounds like you or just sounds fine. A signature title reminds you what territory you actually own, so it stops being an accident. None of this requires shrinking your multi passionate, can’t pick just one lane brain down into something smaller. It requires getting specific enough that the right people finally stop scrolling past you and start recognizing you, the way you’d recognize a friend’s voice in a crowded room.

Where AI Fits, and Where It Doesn’t

Kristin also gets into how she uses Human Design and astrology inside her Signature Brand Dossier to pull all of this together, because apparently feeding an AI your entire personality profile is more useful than any of us gave it credit for. We talk about why AI is genuinely great at synthesis and genuinely bad at knowing who you are without your help, and where a strategist still earns her keep even in a world full of free tools. If your brand has felt a little bit everywhere lately, a little Frankenstein, a little hard to explain at a party, this episode hands you the exact language for where to tighten it. Building a signature brand strategy isn’t about becoming smaller. It’s about becoming unmistakable, and there is nothing generic about that.

FAQ

What is a signature brand strategy?
It’s a framework built around three pillars, credibility, personality, and expression, that work together so your message is consistent, memorable, and specific enough for the right people to recognize you instantly.

How do I know if my brand is too generic?
If people say they love you but can’t quite explain what you do, or your content feels interchangeable with a dozen other people in your space, that’s the sign. Kristin calls it going “broad” instead of signature.

Do I have to niche down to have a signature brand strategy?
Not in the way most people fear. Niching down here means getting specific about the feeling and message you consistently deliver, not eliminating everything you’re multi passionate about.

What’s a credibility line?
A short, repeatable statement that captures your experience and your why in one or two sentences, something you can hold every offer and piece of content up against to check alignment.

Why does AI make branding harder if it’s supposed to help?
Because AI reflects whatever language you feed it. Generic input gets you generic output that sounds fine and says nothing, and that quietly weakens your brand every time you use it as a shortcut.

Can Human Design actually help with branding?
Kristin uses it as one input among several, layered with astrology and personality assessments, to reflect back patterns that are already true about you. It’s a mirror, not a strategy on its own.
