Are you puzzled by the lack of engagement on your Instagram posts? You might be making some Instagram mistakes that are sabotaging your social media game.

But don’t fret; we’ve got the lowdown on the 20 Instagram mistakes you didn’t know you were making and how to turn things around on this week’s episode of Tried & True With a Dash of Woo!

In the realm of social media marketing, Instagram is a powerhouse. A potent tool for online presence, it is a platform that allows businesses to engage with their audience, create compelling content, and increase visibility.

However, effectively leveraging Instagram for business success is not as simple as it seems. It involves a well-thought-out strategy, authentic engagement, and consistent efforts to improve content quality.

So without further ado, here are the 20 Mistakes you might be making on Instagram:

1. Not Following Instagram Guidelines

First up, are you even aware of Instagram’s guidelines? Ignorance is not bliss in this case. Make sure you’re up-to-date with Instagram’s rules to avoid account restrictions or worse, getting shadowbanned. To check if your account has any restrictions, open your account menu and go to Settings and Privacy. Tap Help and go to Account Status. I pay for meta verified and I have to say I love it because you actually get access to live chat if you need it!

2. Not Using Good Quality Video

Quality matters, folks! If your videos look like they were shot on a potato, it’s time for an upgrade. Check your camera settings and make sure you’re uploading in high quality. Your audience will thank you.

3. Not Using Good Lighting

Lighting can make or break your content. So, whether you’re in your car or your chic home office, make sure you’re well-lit. Trust me, good lighting can turn a drab photo into a fab one.

4. Not Making Original Content

Instagram loves originality. So, if you’re only reposting or using stock images, you’re doing it wrong. Get creative and make your content uniquely you. Don’t just regurgitate the same video you saw someone else do – make it your own!

5. Not Engaging With Your Audience

Your followers aren’t just numbers; they’re people. Engage with them by responding to comments and questions. A little interaction goes a long way in building a loyal community. I give you a little tip in this episode that will help you accomplish this without sacrificing your sanity.

6. Not Using Keywords in the Caption for SEO

SEO isn’t just for Google; it’s for Instagram too. Use relevant keywords in your captions to make your posts more discoverable. It’s a simple trick that can yield big results and it’s really the only way to let the algorithm know what you content is about and who it is for.

7. Not DM’ing Your Clients

Your DMs are more than just a place for sliding; they’re a business tool. Ignoring them or taking ages to reply can cost you valuable connections. So, keep that inbox clean and responsive.

8. Not Using Your Location

Geotagging your posts can increase visibility and attract a local audience. So, the next time you’re posting, don’t forget to tag your location. This is how your audience knows where to find you but also how you come up in search.

9. Not Looking at Your Analytics

If you’re not looking at your Instagram analytics, you’re flying blind. These stats can provide invaluable insights into what’s working and what’s not. When you collect this data over time, you will be able to make strategic decisions for your future content.

10. Not Talking Quick Enough

In the fast-paced world of social media, you’ve got to get to the point. Keep your videos concise and your messages clear to keep your audience engaged. Most people will scroll right past your video if you wait a beat to start to speak (also known as the “millennial pause”) or if you just talk too dang slow!  Try cutting your vids shorter and removing the pauses.

11. Not Using Trending Sounds

Trending sounds can give your posts that extra oomph. So, hop on the trend train and incorporate popular sounds into your videos. I give you the low-down on how to find them in this episode.

12. Not Using Audio Controls

Audio controls aren’t just for the pros. Use them to balance the background music and your voice for a more polished video. Nobody likes having to strain to hear your voice over loud music.

13. Not Timing the Video to the Music

A well-timed video can make a world of difference. Sync your content with the music to create a more engaging and enjoyable experience for your viewers.

14. Not Creating Useful Content for Your Audience

Content is king, but only if it serves your audience. Focus on creating posts that solve problems, entertain, or educate. We know that Instagram prioritizes this because they want to make sure that content being produced on the platform is actually useful for people.

15. Not Posting Consistently

Consistency is key in the Instagram game. If you’re posting sporadically, you’re not only confusing your audience but also hurting your visibility.

16. Not Asking People to Add You to Their Favorites List or Using Calls to Action

A simple call to action can work wonders. Ask your followers to add you to their favorites list or to like and share your posts. We don’t want to be doing this in every video, but definitely mix it up with some of the suggestions I give you in this episode.

17. Not Using All the Tools Instagram Gives You

Instagram offers a ton of features, from Stories to Reels. If you’re not using them, you’re missing out big time. The all knowing algorithm prefers it when you do use all the features because that’s letting it know you’re invested and understand the platform well, and that you want to connect with your audience! So, explore all the tools and make the most of what Instagram has to offer.

18. Not Mixing Things Up or Trying Different Types of Content

Variety is key. Don’t just stick to one type of content. Mix it up with carousels, videos, and Stories to keep your audience engaged and intrigued. You also need to do a fair amount of experimenting to see what is actually working or not working.

19. Not Collaborating

Collaboration can open doors and introduce you to a whole new audience. So, reach out to like-minded creators and start collaborating or better yet, work with other brands outside of your industry and expand your reach. I teach senior photographers how to do this in The Creative Team Method but you can even offer a modified version of this using the content I give you in that program.

20. NOT SHOWING UP

Last but not least, you’ve got to show up to blow up. Consistent posting and engagement are crucial for growing your Instagram presence. I have spoken about this a LOT on other episodes of the podcast but it is so important. Please don’t sleep on your opportunity!  Reach out and let me know how I can help.
